BEYOND THE BASICS


PS ARTS Art and Music Instruction
Every Walgrove student benefits from weekly music and art instruction taught by a trained artist teacher as part of the regular curriculum. 

The Shakespeare Club
This club is a free program taught by famed acting a dialogue coach, Mel Ryane, that meets once a week after school.  Students take a multi-disciplinary approach to the topic, exploring the language and drama of his work, as well as the life and times of William Shakespeare.   Click here for more information.

Music, Music, Music
Walgrove is partnered with Strings By The Sea stringsbythesea.org and American Youth Symphony aysymphony.org to provide free violin instruction after school, and the group offers regular performances for the community, most recently at UCLA's Royce Hall.  We also have a student chorus and a District Music Teacher.

Computer, printer and internet access
is available in every classroom, and a state-of-the-art mobile lap-top computer lab is on the way!

Field trips
Every class benefits from field trips every year.  Some of this year's trip destinations included the Cabrillo Beach Museum, the California Science Museum / IMAX, Long Beach Aquarium, UCLA, Getty Museum, Zoo, LACMA, Ballona Wetlands, Pepperdine Arts Program, Page Museum, Music Center, LA Central Public Library and more.

Young Storytellers Program
Professional script writers mentor students in learning and applying the elements of a good script. At the culmination, professional actors and actresses act out the student-developed scripts. Past actors to participate at Walgrove include: Gregory Hines, Jennifer Grey, Constance Marie, Fred Savage, Mark Hamill, and numerous motion picture/TV and commercial actors as well.

Poetry in Motion
Walgrove students enjoy semi-annual visits to classrooms by Stan Lefcourt, the California poet-laureate

Annual Career Day
Career Day is on June 1 this year.  Professionals who presented to the classrooms in the past included Ted Chen of NBC Channel 4 News, Officer Jordan, LA Animal Services, Susan Feist & Calahan, Nurse & Therapy Dog (180 lb. Newfoundland) Dr. Yariv Rothman, Chiropractor Elaine Whitaker, Children's Librarian Dr. Moghimi, Dentist Jhon Mosquera, musician Cayambe, Simone Taylor, DWP Russell Pierson, DWP Engineer Venice 2000, gang prevention specialists Vincent Trotter, PR for LA Avengers football team, Dr. Richard Merrick, and Doctor Kristi Borowski.

Special Programs
Special events and programs this year included the Student Science Fair,  Winter Holidays, the Spring Literacy Fair Carnival, Black History Month, and Hispanic Heritage Month.

Special Performances and Assemblies

such as the Earth Mobile from the California Science Museum, the cow and calf from the California Dairy Council, Jazz Concert from the LA Jazz Society, and much more.
