Mel Ryane has had a long and distinguished acting career. Her work has included both classical and modern theater as well film and television. In Canada she was a member both of THE STRATFORD SHAKESPEAREAN FESTIVAL and THE SHAW FESTIVAL. Her work in the theatre has included major regional theatres across Canada and the U.S.
Several years ago she set that career aside and began a successful career as an acting/dialogue coach. As a coach she has worked on television series, movies of the week and feature films. She also coached actors in a private practice and was talent manager to professional child actors.
Her creative endeavors expanded to include writing and directing. She was invited to direct readings of new plays for the Los Angeles Playwright’s Group. Her sitcom pilot, ASK ALICE, was optioned. She directed her play, TITANIC TWICE, for the DuMaurier World Theater Festival in 1998.
Mel’s acceptance into the American Film Institute’s DIRECTING WORKSHOP FOR WOMEN was a fortuitous and logical next step in her career. Mel was chosen to direct her film, STEPPING ON THE CRACKS, on the basis of her writing, letters of recommendation and her history in the entertainment industry.
Her screenplay, ON THE HEAD OF A PIN was a finalist in the Nicholl Fellowships for screenwriting sponsored by The Motion Picture Academy.
Her memoir, TEACHING WILL has secured representation in NYC and is out to major publishing houses.
Mel writes a successful blog: www.teachingwill.com
In addition, Mel's website: www.melryane.com is an ongoing collection of her writing.
